CPU, GPU combination! One slot for two architectures; Intel predicts that XPU will be launched in 2024
In the early morning of November 11, AMD and Intel both released blockbuster products at the ISC 22 supercomputing conference. AMD is the fourth generation of EPYC with 5nm Zen4 architecture, and Intel is the Xeon Max GPU and the fourth generation of extensible Xeon Sapphire Rapids HBM series.
In addition to these products, Intel also previewed a new type of processor for the future, called XPU, which will integrate CPU and GPU. Specifically, Intel's x86 CPU core and Xe architecture GPU core are integrated in one slot.
This product code is Falcon Shores. In fact, it was announced in January this year that it is scheduled to be launched in 2024. In addition to integrating CPU and GPU, it will actually integrate the next generation of packaging, memory and IO technology, which is specially designed for large-scale data and AI training.
Therefore, the performance of Falcon Shores has been improved significantly. Intel previously said that the performance per watt, computing density, memory capacity and bandwidth of Falcon Shores have been improved by 5 times, which is very good and powerful in all aspects.
Since Falcon Shores is a problem in 2024, the manufacturing process will also be greatly upgraded. Intel refers to the Amy process, but it is uncertain whether it is the 20A or 18A process. Both are Intel's Amy process. The former will be mass produced in the first half of 2024, and the latter in the second half of 2024.
In general, it is more likely to use the 20A process to mass produce Falcon Shores.
